Why Mary is such a beautiful name…Porque Maria es un Nombre Tan Bello…

Virgin Mary

English Spanish

She is Mariam in Greek, Maryam in Arabic, Marie in German, Moyra in Scottish, Mariya in Russian, Miren in Basque, Mariah in English, or Miryam in Hebrew. Her name can be diminutized to Mimi in English or Mitzi or Ria in German or even Maritza in Spanish…  She is still “Maria.” And many countries from Estonia and Russia to Poland and Sweden have many different days of the year to honor this name.

Everyone in my family was named Maria with variations in the middle name except for me, Constancia. There is Maria Cristina, my mom, her sister, Maria Antonia, and my sister Maria Cristina del Carmen de la Candelaria. (De la Candelaria was added after a novena prayer saved her life as an infant).

Why is Maria so special all around the world? Because trust me it is…

It is said that Maria could be derived from an Egyptian name.. meaning “beloved” or “love.” How would you like to be reminded how loving you are each time you are being called…

To me it is also a beautiful name because I feel that it invokes the Divine Feminine or Mother of Jesus who among many things helps women with pregnancy or during labor. I can personally tell you she was there with me at the time of my son’s birth…don’t bother trying to convince me of anything to the contrary.

The name Maria ranks number one in popularity in Portugal and Spain, in years past it tied with Maria Carmen. Jose and Antonio have sort of topped those lists for boys.

The entire fabric of the Mexican culture would be forever changed when Juan Diego saw an apparition of Virgin Mary or La Guadalupana that I plan to go see someday. And on the other side of the world the Russian Orthodox have many icons including the Kursk root icon (it was an icon that had been found in 1295 resting upon the roots of a tree) dedicated to Mary, here you can see hundreds of thousands show up in a procession to catch but a glimpse of this miraculous icon. I had one lucky chance to see this one last year and felt its special presence, will be forever grateful to Father Demetrio for that.

So this week I invite you to seek out and share with a Maria and speak to her about the origin of her name.. call a Maria… sing to a Maria…maybe name a baby girl Maria…love a Maria…and if there is no Maria in your life… turn to the Divine Feminine and she will find the Maria for you. There is just one thing I should mention and that is she cannot be found through the eyes of reason but by following the heart. But above all else in times of trouble, as the Beatles (a legendary British rock group) would say, just let it be and let her in your life.

Let us go over some of the different inspirations that the music industry has derived from this beautiful name.

Here Maria just met a NYC American gang leader’s brother in West Side Story. The moment these two met disturbs the status quo in the story. Yes, this is the beginning of trouble for this classic tragic love story.

I saw him perform in Puerto Rico when I was 13 and just recently saw this artist at the Hialeah Race Track and Casino in Florida; he has been performing for 60 years, hasn’t slowed down one bit..still working the same fast moves on the stage.

9. Here’s a really fun dance song by Ricky Martin for Maria.

8.  La Bella Maria de mi Amor is sung by Antonio Banderas in the movie “Mambo Kings.”

7. It was tough choosing between Pavarotti and Bocelli’s version of Ave Maria… but since I happen to like Bocelli a lot, will stick to this version.

No one is more suave than Julio. Saw him in concert many times starting since I was 14 years old at the James L. Knight Center in Miami. Time is definitely on his side as he seems to have a paintng at home that ages in his place as did Dorian Gray.

5. Ave Maria Morena – Israel López Valdés  known as Cachao was one of the most influential bassists of all-time, the co-creator of the mambo and a master of the descarga (improvised Cuban jam sessions). You cannot listen to this sitting down.. gotta get up and move to celebrate Maria with this Cuban charanga.

4. The Beatles contained all of these great personality archetypes: the Spiritual George Harrison, the Romantic Paul McCartney, the Revolutionary John Lennon, and the Down to Earth Man of the Beat Ringo Starr. This is the reason that together for some time …they ruled the world with the help of Mother Mary, no doubt.

3. Petite Marie is a song that French singer Francis Cabrel sings to his wife Mariette at a radio contest in Toulouse in 1974, leads him to get a contract with CBS Records almost immediately and become one of France’s biggest stars.

2. Just when I thought I was done. My abuela must have whispered to me…no te olvides de Raphael, el favorito de la abuela. El inigualable. Required curriculum for us. We knew every word of every song. Here he sings a version of Ave Maria for the 1968 movie “El Angel.”

  1. So here is my humble opinion. If you have a situation that gets out of hand and you are tempted to use profanity… that may only make the situation worse and spiral down even further. You can say an “Ay Dios Mío” or “Por el Amor de Dios” and it keeps you on a positive note… but if you want a real change to the situation you can count on a Divine Woman Maria and belt out this song… there should be a change in your situation in no time.
